Just over three years ago, the elders at Kettering challenged me with a new project: write a daily devotional every weekday morning for our local congregation. Starting with just a congregational email list, the project has expanded into what it is today. Through last Friday, there have been almost 720 Minute in the Word daily devotionals posted. I find that amazing. Over 700 posts! (more…)
The nation’s cultural decline and moral problems are easy to see. Our culture is running away from God as fast as it can. In its wake are crumbling families who struggle to pick up the pieces. It feels as if family dysfunction has become the norm and the nuclear family is becoming less common. American families are rocked by divorce, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.
What is observed today is not new. Family problems have been around for generations. How can you deal with an imperfect family? (more…)
I love Ezra 7.10. With 26 short words, this passage teaches how you can become effective in leading people closer to God.
For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel.
If God’s people were going to be successful in their return to their homeland, Ezra’s leadership was essential. How did he lead? (more…)
In the Old Testament, Gilead was made famous for a medicinal balm made with sap from a unique bush that grew in that region. Located in the rugged hill country east of the Jordan, God’s people long associated Gilead as a place of healing and safety. (more…)
Before you were in Christ, would you have responded in a way that returned the pain someone caused you? Did you look for revenge? Did you struggle with bitterness? (more…)
I once read of a little girl who explained why she was happy today and not the other day:
Today, I pushed my thoughts around – and the other day I let my thoughts push me around.
Today, you get to determine the state of your mind. How will you approach your day? No matter what confronts you, you have the ability to control your attitude. Don’t let negative thoughts push you around! Abraham Lincoln once said, “I have been as happy as I have made my mind to be.”
What are three ways you can keep a positive attitude? (more…)
Have you ever been honored in such a way that you have been deeply moved?
In Luke 7.36-50, there is a touching story of a woman who approached Jesus and tearfully washed the feet of Jesus with her hair.
Why was she so emotional? (more…)
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him. The Lord said to Satan, “The Lord rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, the Lord who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand plucked from the fire?” Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments and standing before the angel. He spoke and said to those who were standing before him, saying, “Remove the filthy garments from him.” Again he said to him, “See, I have taken your iniquity away from you and will clothe you with festal robes.” Then I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments, while the angel of the Lord was standing by. And the angel of the Lord admonished Joshua, saying, “Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘If you will walk in My ways and if you will perform My service, then you will also govern My house and also have charge of My courts, and I will grant you free access among these who are standing here.

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace, Isaiah 9.6.
Notice the four names given to Jesus. These are all given by God and describe the character of the Savior. Who is Jesus? (more…)
Have you found the joy that is in Christian living?
Only in a relationship with God will you find true inner peace that allows you to rejoice God’s blessing. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near, Philippians 4.4-5. God wants to give you the type of strength and delight that worldly people just can’t understand. Blessed is he who trusts in the Lord, and trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding…he will make your paths straight, Proverbs 16.20, 3.5, 6b. (more…)
